The Project
The Idealist is a response to the Milestones brief and narrates the story of Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the Silk Road— the first and most well-known dark web marketplace.
The Silk Road was a website only accessible through the dark web, in which users could purchase illegal goods anonymously. Items for sale included: drugs, weapons, human organs and stolen personal information, alongside almost anything else that can be thought of.
This unique interactive web experience traces the story of Ulbricht’s journey from his humble and optimistic beginnings to his eventual moral decay as he becomes increasingly corrupted by the power he wields.

The digital web format lends itself positively to the context of Ulbricht’s extraordinary journey and showcases the complexity of this infamous web marketplace through motion graphics and user interface and experience. The typographic approach represents the interactive experience a user of Silk Road might have faced when navigating the internet-based marketplace.
The website has been fully designed in Figma, with all motion graphics and transitions carefully crafted using individual frames.
